Cancer Awareness Voyage Sails into Philadelphia; Fox Chase Cancer Center Hosts Jan's House of Hope

PHILADELPHIA (June 12, 2001) -- Jan's House of Hope, a 3,100 square foot dream home perched on an ocean barge docks at Penn's Landing and opens for public tours July 13-15. This state-of-the-art home is the centerpiece of a cancer awareness voyage along the Northeast coast. A quarter million people are expected to tour this two-story home.

Jan's House of Hope was inspired by Jan Rouleau after she died of lung cancer. It is dedicated to all who are fighting cancer or have fought cancer. This huge two-story home is journeying from Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Norfolk, Virginia between June 1 and July 29, making five stops along the way.

Jan's House of Hope is beautifully decorated with a fully landscaped yard. It opens for tours after docking on the Philadelphia waterfront at Penn's Landing Friday, July 13th. Tours run Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $8 (half price if a new hat or scarf is donated). The proceeds from the Philadelphia visit benefit Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Jan's House of Hope has three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms and a three-car garage. There were 125 builders involved with the construction of the house and more than 3,000 hours of volunteer labor. Inside, the home is fully decorated and furnished by Home Magazine. This project was produced by the National Cancer Awareness Foundation and Home magazine in cooperation with many sponsors. About 98% of the house and its contents have been donated.

The Jan's House of Hope web site,, includes a special dedication page -- Valiant Heroes, where individuals can list the names of family and friends who have battled cancer. Over 2,500 of the names will also be listed in a place of honor in the home as it travels from port to port. There is no charge to add names to the Valiant Heroes dedication page, even after the house sets sail. Many people are choosing to donate $250 and become a "Square Foot" sponsor in honor of a loved one.

To kick off the weekend-long festivities, Peter Nero and The Philly Pops will perform a special tribute during the Christening Preview party on Friday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn's Landing. This celebration is dedicated to the outstanding nurses at Fox Chase Cancer Center. Fox Chase nurses have received the top nursing honor of the American Nurses Association, the Magnet Nursing Services Recognition Award. The award makes Fox Chase the only specialty hospital in the nation and the only hospital in Pennsylvania to be recognized with Magnet status for outstanding nursing care. Tickets for the reception and dinner including the Peter Nero and The Philly Pops concert start at $250.
