Stephen A. Boorjian, MD

I joined the faculty at Fox Chase as a urologic oncologist because of the model of care which the institution embodies for its patients.  Specifically, I recognize that the care of patients with genitourinary malignancies often involves a multidisciplinary approach.  Therefore, I work closely with my colleagues in medical and radiation oncology to ensure that my patients receive a thorough and comprehensive evaluation in order to develop the most appropriate and effective individual treatment plan.

I believe in a thoughtful, compassionate approach to patient care in which the patient is a partner in the decision-making process regarding their treatment.  Having been fellowship-trained in open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery, I am able to offer patients the approach which I believe provides the best chance for cancer cure while maintaining their quality of life, and which I would recommend to a member of my own family.

Clinically, I have extensive training in minimally-invasive surgery including nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomy.  I have also had specialty training in the treatment of advanced urologic malignancies, including kidney cancer with tumor thrombus, bladder cancer with neobladder reconstruction, and post-chemotherapy surgery for testicular cancer.

My research interests include investigating the mechanisms which are responsible for the development of bladder and prostate cancers in order to develop novel therapeutic approaches for these malignancies.  I have authored over 50 journal papers and book chapters, and I believe that active participation in research helps me to remain aware of the most current treatments available for my patients.
