Not just a great place for Treatment—
Fox Chase Cancer Center offers a Full Range of Traditional and Advanced Screening Options
Fox Chase Cancer Center's reputation for quality cancer treatment also includes an outstanding program for prevention and screening examinations.
Cancer prevention and early detection begins with knowing your cancer risk; then, doing something about it. Regular screening may help detect cancer at its earliest stages when the chance of a cure is highest.
Preventive care such as screening tests and physical examinations may or may not be covered by an individual's health insurance. A referral from your physician may be required for insurance purposes. This should not be a barrier to making that initial call.

For people at age 50 or older, screening to prevent colon cancer should be part of their routine healthcare. For people with higher risks for colon cancer, such as having a family history of colon cancer or personal history of certain types of cancer, screening may start at an earlier age.
At Fox Chase, our gastroenterologists are very experienced at performing high-quality colonoscopy. We not only perform routine screening procedures on our patients, but also serve as a second-opinion center for difficult colonoscopies referred by other facilities. Read more »
In addition, Fox Chase offers Open Access Endoscopy services for referring physicians to expedite scheduling routine screening procedures.
While many people in the area are familiar with Fox Chase Cancer Center's Mammography Van, it's important to remember that full mammography services are always available at the Center.
A recent National Study of Lung Cancer from the National Institute of Health found that screening for lung cancer using low-dose chest CT scan can lower the chances of dying from lung cancer by 20%.
The study was with smokers or past smokers ages 55 to 74 who smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day fo at least 30 years (30 pack/years). About 200 out of 1,000 people screened during a three-year period had abnormal (not normal) CT scans. After more studies, lung cancer was found in about 30 of those 300 people.
This means about 270 out of 1,000 screened people (270/1000) had false positive findings. In other words, something abnormal was found that needed follow up, but was not cancer. For some of these people, that may have led to tests or treatments that weren't needed and had certain risks.
The whole study called for at least three CT scans at certain time points. This is because a single CT scan is not enough to diagnose lung cancer. The goal of this program is to help find lung caners early when they may be more treatable.

Some prostate cancers may be found because of symptoms, such as slowing or weakening of the urinary stream or the need to urinate more often. These symptoms can also be caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. Most early prostate cancers cause no symptoms and are found early by screening tests. Fox Chase uses the most advanced screening tools to diagnose prostate cancer as accurately as possible.

Get the Facts on Skin Cancer
- Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer among American men and the sixth most common among American women.
- More than 53,000 cases a year are diagnosed in this country.
- Half the cases occur after age 50, but people as young as 20 are also at risk.
- Melanoma is now one of the most common cancers affecting Americans younger than 30.
- Among women between 25 and 29 years old, melanoma is more common than any non-skin cancer.
- Melanoma kills nearly 8,000 Americans a year.
- An estimated 80 percent of sun damage occurs before age 18, which can set the stage for skin cancer later. (Protecting children from sun is very important!)
Dermatologists recommend that very year on your birthday you take a good look at your birthday suit. If you notice anything on your skin that is changing, growing, or bleeding, see a dermatologist.
Regular check-ups are important. Skin cancer is very treatable when caught early.
Nonmelanoma skin cancers tend to grow slowly and rarely spread. Of the 3 different types of skin cancer, melanoma is the least common but more aggressive than basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma. It can occur anywhere on the body. And it can be deadly, but melanoma is curable if detected early.
