Local trains and buses
The Southeastern PA Transit Authority (SEPTA) operates the trains and buses in the Philadelphia area. SEPTA bus routes 18 and 24 connect to the Fox Chase Cancer Center. Monthly or weekly passes are available, in addition to cash, tokens, and train tickets. Passengers are permitted to bring a bike onboard, with some restrictions.
The R8 train goes into Center City (what Philadelphians call downtown) and takes about 20 minutes. The closest R8 station is Ryers, at Cottman & Rockwell Avenues. See their web site for more train and bus routes, or call 215-580-7800.

To New York
Both Amtrak and New Jersey Transit (NJT) operate trains to New York City and other points north, but the NJT rate is a bargain.
Take the SEPTA R7 train to Trenton, NJ, to connect with NJT service to New York. (By car, you can reach the Trenton station from Fox Chase in about 30 minutes.) The one-way trip is approximately two hours, depending on connections. Amtrak service from 30th Street Station is approximately 90 minutes. The SEPTA R8 connects with 30th Street Station for connections to either the R7 or Amtrak.
Many places are easiest to get to by car, so postdocs often buy cars while at FCCC.
Driver's License and Registration of Vehicles in Pennsylvania
Even if you do have an international license you will eventually have to re-take your driving test. If you buy a car, or bring it into the state, you will need to register the car in Pennsylvania. For information on obtaining a driving license and vehicle registration, visit the PA Department of Motor Vehicles.
Pennsylvania has one of the highest car insurance rates in the US. It is astronomical, particularly for people with no US driving history. Shop around carefully!
