Arland Hotchkiss and Rafa invite you to join them at the 16th Annual Paws for the Cause.
When my doctor suggested I get a prostate biopsy due to elevated PSA levels, I expected the results to be negative. I had just turned 50 and had no family history of prostate cancer. So it was a complete shock in September, 2008, when the biopsy showed early stage disease. As a scientist I was skeptical that I really had cancer, so I got a second opinion at Fox Chase. In fact, I still didn’t accept that I had cancer until I was able to personally review my own biopsy slides under the microscope with the renowned Fox Chase pathologist, Dr. Harry Cooper. When I saw the cells with my own eyes and Dr. Cooper explained the significance of how certain cells were stained a particular way, I realized I truly did have cancer and needed treatment.
As an avid tennis player, runner and Boy Scout leader, I chose robotic surgery because my cancer was early stage and I wanted a minimally invasive therapy with few side effects. Dr. David Chen performed my surgery in November, 2008, and I was back on the tennis court hitting balls in 2 weeks and back at work full time in 6. I think being able to return to my normal routine so soon after treatment greatly contributed to my physical and emotional recovery. Being a cancer survivor changed my life forever and continues to shape the way I live my life today. I am a proponent of prostate cancer screening and will always be grateful to the clinically excellent, caring doctors and nurses at Fox Chase.
My dog, Rafa, is a survivor as well. Rafa’s story began in southern Virginia where a passing motorist found him lying in a ditch, starved—weighing just 14 pounds—and too weak to move. He was taken to a local shelter near death but according to staff survived against almost insurmountable odds. He eventually made his way to a cocker spaniel rescue near the Washington, DC, area for additional therapy and we adopted him from there. In case you are wondering, we name all of our pets after tennis players—so Rafa is named for tennis great Rafael Nadal!
Rafa and I are honored to be Ambassadors of the 2015 Paws for the Cause. We invite you to join us on Sunday, October 18 for a dog walk around the Fox Chase grounds to raise money for cancer research. Hundreds of participants and their pups will enjoy food, music, pet photos and contests, pet vendors and rescue organizations, entertainment for children and much more.
Grab your pooch and let’s take a Sunday stroll to raise funds for an important cause!
