Most Parents Who Get Tested for Breast Cancer Genes Share Results with their Children

PHILADELPHIA (January 9, 2012) – A new study has found that when parents get tested for breast cancer genes many of them share their results with their children—even with those who are very young. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study also revealed that most parents think that their children are not distressed when they learn about the test results.

Targeted Therapy Extends Progression-Free Survival of Patients with Advanced Ovarian Cancer

PHILADELPHIA (December 28, 2011) – Targeted drugs, which block or disrupt particular molecules involved in the growth of tumors, have been shown to be effective treatments against many types of cancer. A new phase 3 clinical trial conducted by the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) showed that a targeted therapy called bevacizumab (Avastin) effectively delayed the progression of advanced ovarian cancer. Patients with newly diagnosed advanced ovarian cancer now typically undergo surgery and chemotherapy, but the new research suggests an additional avenue of treatment.

Circulating Tumor Cells Not Linked to Survival in Women Newly Diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer

SAN ANTONIO, TX (December 9, 2011)—The presence of circulating tumor cells in the blood appears to have no relationship to survival in women who have just been diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer, according to new research from Fox Chase Cancer Center. However, the research shows that these stray tumor cells may signal that the disease has spread to other parts of the body, even before imaging reveals any metastases. The results will be presented on Friday, December 9 at the 2011 CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

Fox Chase Hosts Singer, Songwriter, and Cancer Survivor Charlie Lustman

Philadelphia (November 30, 2011) – On Thursday, December 1, 2011, Fox Chase Cancer Center will host singer, songwriter, and cancer survivor Charlie Lustman.  The inspirational “minstrel of hope” will stroll through the halls of the hospital singing upbeat songs to cancer patients and their family and friends from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m., with a special performance in the Fox Chase cafeteria (333 Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia) at 3:30 p.m., as part of his “Musical HOPE Campaign.”
